Recognizing what is most important When studying for exams and taking practice tests, it can be tempting to think that the mere act of sitting down and completing the practice test will benefit you. Find out what your tendencies are and make appropriate adjustments based on your results. Types of questions Now, examine the types of questions that cause you problems. If the practice test only encompasses one subject area, look at your results on essay questions, the multiple choice section, the fill-in-the-blank section, etc. There are a variety of strategies applicable to each type of question, so spend some time researching effective strategies for the areas in which you are struggling. Evaluate the difficulty level of the questions on which you tend to err. This will help you identify where you experience the most issues. Reviewing the questions It is not always sufficient to review the number of wrong answers aloneyou are going to need to explore a little further to find out what your strengths and weaknesses are. By thoroughly analyzing your results, you are likely to find a study plan that works well for you. Find out why you are right Even if you chose the correct answer, it is helpful to assess the topic at hand. Are you able to thoroughly explain your answer? Know why you selected that answer, and try to remember that information. Find out why you are wrong It is normal to want to know why some of your answers are incorrect. When you review the questions and your answers, look at all of the incorrect choices and determine why each of them is not suitable. Some reasons may be obvious, but others may be a bit more complex. One answer may be inadequate because of a minute detail. Songwriting Tips 11 Examples From 7 Hit Songs Suzy S. Writing a catchy song that delivers a strong message can be quite difficult. Here, voice  teacher  Emmanuel N.  shares the songwriting tips you can glean from several famous singers   When it comes to lyric-writing and songwriting, nobody can really teach you how to do it â€" it’s better to show by example. Whether you’re simply writing  lyrics to a song you will one day sing (or someone else will sing for you) or you’re songwriting to a musical piece you found or created, you will have your own unique style. Songwriting and lyric-writing are some of the few artistic skills that are difficult to truly teach. There are some songwriting tips and suggestions that can be very beneficial, but there is no real “by the book” way of writing  lyrics for  a song. So, the next best thing is offering examples of great songs  by some very talented artists  and  songwriters. Although the artists listed below may not be the top singer-songwriters of all time, they represent a range of genres, including RB (my specialty). Listen to the lyrics in the tunes below, then check out my notes on what you can learn from each about writing songs: Looking At Her â€" Paul McCartney [written by Paul McCartney] Matching the melody of the vocals with the melody of the song is not a bad thing. Don’t be afraid to do what Paul did at [1:40] in the bridge where his vocals match the main melody of the music (“Doesn’t she know…”). Nobody Ever Told You â€" Carrie Underwood [written by Carrie, Lindsey, and Laird] When writing a song with a positive message, making it personal gives the song a stronger meaning. Carrie does this in the first verse as she talks about  how beautiful she is despite what society says. At [0:21], for example, she says “…Don’t be shy, don’t be scared…” when pertaining to showing your real self. Using similes in a song makes the lyrics more beautiful and poetic. Carrie does this at [0:51] and [2:20] with her chorus and bridge to give the listener a more vivid picture of just how beautiful they are (“You shine like a diamond, glitter like gold… you’re free as a bird… just like a flower growing wild.”) Looking In â€" Mariah Carey [written by Mariah Carey  Afanasieff] Similar to Carrie Underwoods song, youll notice that getting personal in a song makes it that much more emotional and powerful. At [1:23] Mariah continues her second verse describing some girl by using “she,” yet not telling us who it is. She ends the verse by revealing this “she” was Mariah herself all along (“…and hides herself inside of me”), making it very personal. Dont be afraid to  be passionate, emotional, and show your frustration. The bridge at [1:51] is short but straight to the point; Mariah exclaims her frustration on the lack of people understanding her pain and where she is coming from (“Don’t say she takes it all for granted… Please understand”). You Said â€" Keri Hilson [written by Keri Hilson] Having each line in a chorus start off the same is a good way to grab  someone’s attention â€" and it makes the song catchy. Keri’s chorus at [0:48] starts off each line with “Thought you said…” to capture that feeling of annoyance we get when we’ve been lied to repeatedly. The bridge of a song is the perfect place to get real and just say it like it is â€" and if you’re going to repeat it, add some harmonies like she did. At [2:11] Keri gets to the point and tells her boyfriend he lost her trust (“…now I can’t believe a word that comes from you”). Cry â€" Mariah Carey [written by Mariah Carey  James Wright] When the music gets stronger and more powerful, let loose and let those emotions out. During the bridge, as the piano chords get stronger, Mariah gets dynamic  as she lets those emotions out at [3:06]. “…So naked…” is extended vocally to let the emotions sink in, in between emotional lyrics. Born This Way â€" Lady Gaga [written by Gaga and Laursen] Adding a message in the intro of a song has a good chance of  capturing the listener’s attention. Lady Gaga does this in the beginning of her song with, “It doesn’t matter if you love him or capital H-I-M…” to provide a sort of prologue to the song. Don’t be afraid to use the title of your song throughout the entire song itself. Lady Gaga mentions “born this way” in the intro, first verse, chorus, bridge, and outro several times to truly stress that we really are born this way (regarding what makes us different, so that we learn to love ourselves and each other). My Everything â€" Ariana Grande [written by Ariana et al.] Use a specific theme to give your message more dimension. At [1:10] Ariana uses the theme of distance and time to show the strain that distance has on her  relationship. With “I know you’re not far… can’t handle all the distance… you’re traveling with my heart… temporary feeling,” you can see the theme play out nicely and poetically. So there you have it, some examples that showcase how creative you can get when writing songs. I have written more than  100 songs and I learned by listening to songs that inspire me or make me feel something. FAFSA FAQ for Parents 2019 If youve got a college-bound teen, youre probably at least a little familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), but do you know how this application can affect your teens future? Here are some frequently asked questions about the FAFSA and the process of applying for and getting federal student aid: What is the FAFSA? The FAFSA is an application, but it is also your familys gateway to getting financial aid to pay for college. Your teen cannot get federal student aid (such as federal grants, work-study, and loans) if they dont complete the FAFSA. And many states and colleges use it to determine student eligibility for state and school aid, too. When should we complete the FAFSA? For the 2019-2020 school year, students and/or parents can apply between October 1, 2018 and June 30, 2020. For the 2020-2021 school year, students and/or parents can apply between October 1, 2019 and June 30, 2021. Keep in mind, however, that many states and colleges have earlier deadlines for state and college aid. Your teen should check with the college to be sure. Who is eligible to receive financial aid? The FAFSA website lists the specific, detailed requirements, but generally, students must hold a high school diploma or General Education Development certificate and be enrolled in an eligible program as a regular student seeking a degree or certificate, maintaining satisfactory academic progress. They must be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens with Social Security Numbers, not be in default on any federal student loans, not have any convictions for the possession or sale of illegal drugs, and register with the Selective Service System if male and not currently on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. What do students need to complete the FAFSA? Students and/or parents need a Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number, federal income tax returns, W-2s, and records of taxed or untaxed income, bank and investment records, and an FSA ID, which parents and students can create at https://fsaid.ed.gov. When are state student aid and college aid deadlines? They vary from state to state, college to college. Its best to contact the colleges your teen is interested in attending to find out for sure. Should my teen apply to colleges before completing the FAFSA? Applicants have to list at least one college that will receive their FAFSA information, but they dont have to wait until they have applied to list a school. Your teen should list all schools theyre interested in (up to 10 are allowed). If your teen later considers a new school, they can submit a correction to the FAFSA online. Are grades a factor for financial aid? They are not. However, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to continue receiving federal student aid. Each school has its own policy for what that means (typically a minimum GPA and number of credits per year), so check with the college. Does my teen have to apply one time only? No, your teen needs to submit the FAFSA every year. It is possible that the aid package awarded to him or her will change after the first year. Your teen also needs to make satisfactory academic progress in order to remain eligible for federal aid. In other words, students who earn poor grades in college are putting their financial aid eligibility at risk. Once weve applied, what happens? Your teens application will be processed by the U.S. Department of Education within 3-10 days. After that, your teen will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR), which summarizes the information provided on the FAFSA and includes an Expected Family Contribution. Colleges use this figure to determine federal and nonfederal student aid and to create student award packages. How is the Expected Family Contribution calculated? This federal formula considers your familys taxed and untaxed income, assets, and benefits (like unemployment), as well as your family size and the number of family members in college that year. Expected Family Contribution is not an amount of money your family is required to pay for college or the amount of financial aid your teen will be eligible to receive. The majority of these letters tend to come from high school teachers who can give insight into how the student performs and acts in the classroom. As such, having good letters of recommendation is important for your applications. However, asking for letters is a topic of significant stress for many students. Which teachers should I ask? When do I ask? How do I make sure they write me a good letter? How should I ask them? These are all common questions, but luckily, they have relatively straightforward answers: Which teachers should I ask? Ask the teachers who know you best. It is not vital that you got an ‘A in their class (though it is preferred). The letter of recommendation doesnt have to talk about specific grades. What you want from a letter is for it to be personal and stand out. Ideally, you ask sometime in your junior year. You can also ask over the summer. Teachers get the most requests from procrastinating students shortly before deadlines. A letter is extra work for a teacher. If they have a dozen extra letters to write two weeks before application deadlines, then they are unlikely to be putting in a huge individual effort into your letter. Ask early, and send occasional (friendly!) reminders. How do I make sure they write me a good letter? Show them what you want. Many teachers dont know how to write good letters. It is very common to receive a poor letter from a teacher who had the best intentions. It is also very common to receive a poor letter from a teacher who didnt know enough about you to write a detailed one. The letter of recommendation should be an opportunity for you to highlight the skills and qualities that you want to be emphasized on your application. Here are two ways to help guarantee: -Give a list of things you would like mentioned in your letter. This way they know what you want written about and have a reminder of things youve done. You can also include what you dont want to be mentioned if there is something youre worried about being included. -Write your letter for them. This is slightly controversial as you are not supposed to be writing your own letters. Here is how you do it ethically: write an example letter that is exactly what you are hoping that the teacher would write. Dont be humble in it; it may feel embarrassing, but now is the time to brag about yourself. Then, give it to your teacher as an example of what youre looking for. Ask if they could write a letter similar to the one you gave them and that they can use your letter for reference. How should I ask? In person, early, and with material for them to use. If you cant ask in person because its the summer, then it is okay to email rather than waiting for the year to begin. Make sure you include either the list of things you want to be included, or an example letter. When you ask, dont ask if they can just write you a letter. Ask if they would be comfortable writing a letter touching on the things that you provided them. It is okay if they say no, or thats not how they write letters, or that they dont accept input from students on letters. At that point, its usually better to ask a different teacher, unless you are confident that this one will write a good letter on your own. You will find that many teachers will be more than happy to use the guidelines you provide or to simply edit a letter that you already wrote. It makes the process easier for them and better for you.
